ABOUT THE PROJECT

As the poorest county in Mississippi, Holmes County maintains a median per capita income of only ~$12,000/year. With this extreme level of poverty, over 38% of children within the county are labeled as food insecure. This harsh reality is abundantly clear in Durant Elementary School where, for many students, the only guaranteed meal of the day is the one they receive from the school cafeteria.

Feeding the Future Mississippi (FFMS) seeks to fill in the gap by working to ensure that no child in the Holmes County school system has to go hungry. Through a partnership with the Mississippi Food Network (a subsidiary of Feeding America), FFMS provides every child with a discreet backpack filled with nutritious meals each weekend throughout the school year.

  • Each weekend package includes the following:

    • 2 Breakfast Meals

    • 2 Entrees

    • 2 Fruits

    • 2 100% Fruit Juice Boxes

    • 1 Dairy Item

These meals are distributed by a school employee at the end of each school week. With 100% of all donations going directly toward meal costs, we are able to provide these packages for as little as $5 per child per week. For just $180, you can guarantee that a child is fed every weekend throughout the entire school year.
